With more models than you can shake a stick at, London Fashion Week kicked off last Friday (17 September) with its champagne, catwalks and perhaps the odd backstage catfight.

But the glitz and glamour isn’t just for the top designers. BIG has been bang on trend too with its Dress for Success project in London, helping support disadvantaged women.

Dress for Success helps women learn interview techniques and presentation skills, and also provides one-to-one and group support to assist them in finding work. And now there’s also the chance to have a ‘Trinny and Susannah’-style makeover to make sure they look and feel the part in time for the all-important interview.

Clothes are all donated by fashion retailers and the project is supported by well-known designers Bobbi Brown and Betty Jackson. The project hopes the women will get a much-needed confidence boost to both land and keep a job, so that they can provide a better life for themselves and their families.

And it’s not just London that’s on the fashion radar – Partick in Glasgow hopes to be home to the next generation of young designers, thanks to Lottery money. The Studio run by Partick Community Association at the Annex received a Young People’s Fund grant back in 2006 to offer 300 local young people the chance to take part in arts and design classes.
