We’re making a big difference

8 July 2013

Our latest film puts funded projects in the spotlight, seeing them explain what they think it takes to make a big difference. In this guest blog, Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust‘s Hunter Reid tells us more about their experience of being filmed and how their project has touched all corners of the community.

When we were asked to become involved in the Big Lottery Fund’s Making a difference film we were excited and delighted to hear that our project would feature.

Some of us were nervous about the prospect of being live on camera but when we met the professional film crew and the reassuring Big Lottery Fund staff, we were put at ease.

The young musicians in the band that the crew filmed in our recording studio took to it like ducks to water, so we thought it would be a doddle.  However, when it came to the bit of talking live to camera it took quite a few takes, even to get our one liners right!

We were delighted that our Chair Irene Scott was included in the film with her words:  “We’ve restored a fabulous historic building here and it’s put the heart back into the community.”

This really sums up what our Board, Trust members and our partner organisations have felt so strongly about since they started on the journey some ten years ago to make our project the reality it has now become.

Our project includes the restoration of a 135 year old historically listed and well-loved semi-derelict public hall, and around this we’ve built new dynamic contemporary buildings constructed in steel and glass and clad with timber and zinc – our designers creating a well-balanced harmony between old and new.

We have provided modern facilities including a beautiful and heavily used multi-purpose events space which contains the restored original stained glass windows that depict the workers who carried out the traditional trades and industries of Maryhill around 1878.

Within our buildings we now have a vibrant nursery, two recording studios, a cafe, a dance school for children, a ceramics studio and a variety of offices/studio spaces for rent.

We think the Making a difference film is wonderful and will contribute and inspire people in lots of areas.  Well done once again, Big Lottery Fund! You really are making a big difference.
