A Big Moment for wheelchair users in North Berwick

15 December 2015

An innovative beach scheme for North Berwick’s wheelchair users is the focus of June’s funding, as we check in with them to find out about their Big Moment of the year.

Scotland’s only beach wheelchair loan scheme – ran by North Berwick Community Centre – was awarded £10,000 at the start of June. The scheme loans free beach ready wheelchairs designed to cope with wet or dry sand to wheelchair users of all ages; giving them the chance to enjoy a day beside the seaside. The benefit of these wheelchairs means that people have much more freedom to move around the beach and explore without having to rely on people carrying them to each spot.beach-wheelchairs-boy-blog

What’s more, this groundbreaking project has the potential to be expanded across the whole of Scotland to help even more lives. Although, sadly they cannot guarantee good weather!

Alison Brown, co-founder and Chair of the Beach Wheelchair project said of their year:

“Thanks to The Big Lottery Fund, Beach Wheelchairs North Berwick were able to open for business.

Some 60 free beach wheelchair hires have been made, enabling families, friends and carers to get on to the beach together and enjoy the fun and health benefits of this simple pleasure.

One user summed it up with ‘the most fun I have had in years’

Now, over to you. The team at the Beach Wheelchair project have had a great year seeing their scheme get up off the ground and start helping local wheelchair users. Undoubtedly a great Big Moment, but what was yours? Join in with the discussion and share your Big Moment using our hashtag #BigMoment on Twitter and Facebook.
