A Big Moment for Back Up Trust and Great Yarmouth Council

17 December 2015

Throughout the year, our responsive funding has been a quick and easy way to get Lottery grants to fund a wide range of community projects to develop skills, improve health and enable people to become more active citizens. Through our Awards for All and Reaching Communities funding we’ve helped projects all over the UK have their Big Moment.

In August two very different projects received funding.

The Back Up Trust, which provides information and support for people affected by spinal cord injury, received funding for their Join the Dots Outreach and Support project. Across England, the project will equip people with the practical and emotional tools to manage the transition from hospital to home.

Polly Nabarro, Mentoring Manager at Back Up looked back on their year:

“The Big Lottery Fund has been hugely important to our mentoring service, which supported 140 people in England this year to deal with the paralysis, trauma and other issues that follow spinal cord injury.

“A highlight for us was presenting our work internationally to a European conference of spinal injuries psychologists, promoting the development of similar services in other countries. Our funding meant we could grow the service and we are excited to continue doing so next year.”

Meanwhile, in Great Yarmouth, a pioneering project is supporting vulnerable people to overcome a range of issues and develop skills to benefit themselves and their neighbourhoods. Great Yarmouth Borough Council received funding to lead a partnership to employ ‘Community Connectors’ – local residents with strong community links – to build relationships with people struggling with mental illness, homelessness debt, unemployment and substance misuse. isolation - blog

Over to the council and their Big Moment:

“Through building stronger communities that are better connected to each other and the local economy we are redesigning services in Great Yarmouth to grow ‘Neighbourhoods that Work’.

“This is a bold and exciting programme for both the Big Lottery and partners in Great Yarmouth and will truly transform the way we work with communities in the future.”
