Join the big conversation about care!

19 February 2016

Today sees the launch of ‘5 Nations, 1 Voice’, an alliance connecting care-experienced young people across the UK and Ireland. We hear from Natasha Finlayson, Chief Executive, The Who Cares? Trust, a voice and champion for children and young people living in care in England.

There are approximately 100,000 children and young people in care across the UK and Ireland at any one time. Unable to live with their families, they’ve had to adapt to new foster families, or residential placements – often many times over. They might have had to change schools, or have lost contact with siblings who are not nearby.

Cumbria-Youth-AllianceThe challenges of growing up in care are similar whether someone is growing up in Aberdeen or Aberystwyth. That’s why a new alliance has been formed comprising five charities representing children in care and care leavers across the UK and Ireland. With support from the Big Lottery Fund, 5 Nations 1 Voice will be helping young people from care shape policy and effect change across nations. Young people will be given the chance to build supportive networks with each other, both face-to-face and online.

To mark the alliance launch, today has been named #CareDay. It’s aiming to celebrate the achievements of children in care and care leavers and to encourage people to share aspirations for the future of the care system. As well as holding various events across the five nations, we’re also kicking off a big conversation about care on social media and we’re asking everyone to Tweet their dreams for the care system.

Some of the young people and professionals we work with at The Who Cares? Trust have shared their thoughts with us already, for example:

“My dream for the care system is….”

  • “That care never cuts off at any age.”
  • “For outcomes to be the same as for those not in the care system.”
  • “That children in care will be inspired to think they can achieve.”

What are your dreams for the care system? Join the big conversation by…

  • Tweeting @WhoCaresTrust on 19 February using the hashtag #CareDay
  • If you don’t use Twitter, you can email your message to goldsmith@thewhocarestrust.org.uk for us to share on your behalf.

The 5 Nations 1 Voice alliance brings together Who Cares? Scotland, The Who Cares? Trust (England), Voices from Care (Wales) VOYPIC (Northern Ireland) and EPIC (Ireland).
